Hobo SL Starter Kit Getting, giving, buying |
How to get into Second Life without really trying |
| People and objects will give you things. You
will want to give other people things (especially notecards). You will buy things. Here
is what you need to know about getting, giving and buying. Getting Whenever somebody sends you something, you get message saying that so-and-so has offered you inventory. You have the option to decline it. No harm in taking it. But don't rez or wear anything unless you know what it is going to do. (Rez means drag from your inventory onto a surface. This action makes the object appear in the place you indicated.) If someone you don't know offers you something, leave it alone until you know the person better. If you wonder whether it is safe to rez something, ask a more experienced friend (a hobo, for example). Notecards, textures, or landmarks are innocuous. You can safely set the system to handle these automatically: Edit > Preferences > Popups > (check boxes near the bottom). Buying (How to get cheated in SL -- so important we put it in several languages.) How to open boxes Sometimes you will get things in boxes. Many freebees come in such boxes -- a box of ladies clothing, for example. To open a box, you need to be in place that allows rezzing -- a sandbox, for example. (LM -- Hobo Sandbox.) Rez the box (drag it from your inventory to the ground). Left click the box. You will probably get a window showing the contents of the box and an option to copy the contents to your inventory. Take that option. The entire contents will be copied to a newly created folder in your inventory. To see the contents, click on the Recent Items tab in your inventory. To find the name of the folder, look in your chat history (bottom screen left -- if you don't see it, click on the talk balloon in the same area). Giving things to people You give things by dragging them onto their avatar, onto their profile window, or onto an IM window set to them. If they are not online, the thing will be saved for later delivery. Free to Copy Many objects, particularly in places that welcome newcomers, have objects that will let you take a copy. You will see that information in the text that appears when you hover your cursor over the object. To take a copy, right click to get pie menu. Click More (bottom). Click Take copy (top) |
