Hobo SL Starter Kit
for people coming into Second Life
How to get into Second Life without really trying
This venue is a master copy for text part of Hobo SL Starter Kit.  Kit exists in Second Life as a notecard with many embedded notecards carrying specific items of information.  The text items are also offered here.  There are other items offered in the SL version -- landmarks and objects.  These can only be used in SL, so they are just mentioned here or replaces by links to other pages in the SL sections of this website.

To access anything embedded in a notecard, click on the graphic.   Be patient, SL can have slow deliveries.  Some things (notecards and images, for example) will be displayed to you. Others will be handled the way SL thinks you probably want it handled.

All of the cards in this include the name Hobo, so you can find them later by searching your inventory for hobo.  (BTW, the quaint SL Search system does not distinguish between CAPS and lowercase.)

Things newcomers want to be able to do

To contact someone:
Search (bottom center) > People Tab > enter name, click Search> Click Instant Message or drop notecard. on profile. People who are not online will still get you message, either in e-mail or when they next sign on.

To join a group
Search (bottom center) > Groups Tab > enter name, click Search> Click name and look for full profile. Click join if offered. Otherwise, look through members list for a name in bold. Click it and send IM to owner.

To organize information
This notecard is an example of a simple and free way to organize information. You can add (enbed) new notecards in any notecard by dragging them from your inventory onto the  card. You can add your own notes: just type and save. You can remove notecards as you do with any text -- highlight and delete, for example.

You can embed other things in your inventory as long as they are copyable. If you can't embed something, that probably means it has not been set to copy.

Play music or show video or webages.
You must have media authority on the land to set media streams. You have that if you own the land or belong to a group that owns the land and you have the appropriate role in the group. (You may have to be wearing that role tag.)

Audio streaming:
Clik name of parcel (Top bar)
> Media tab
> Music URL: (Insert url in white bar) -- if you can't so this, you dont have the authority . Check your group tag and group settings.
> allow 2 mins or more to start,

Video streaming
Go to the media tab as above.
>Media type: Movie
> Enter url > set
> Choose texture otherwise not used on the land. Drag that into the box marked "Repalce texture"
> Check Auto scale

Web-on-prim
Go to the media tab as above.
>Media type: text/html
> Enter url > set
> Choose texture otherwise not used on the land. Drag that into the box marked "Repalce texture"
> Check Auto scale

Stream your own content:
> find host that can support multiple streams. Each listener gets separate stream. Thus it is generally not possible for individuals to host. A website can probably stream audio. It depends on how many simultaneous users there are.

For video, a college or university probably has the respources neeeded. Some post on Blip.tv. or YouTube. SL requires a format compatible with Quicktime. On Blip.tv you can post in the correct format. Special entries may be needed to play from YouTube. For help, ask Hobo Junction.

Stream a live production
Audio: Shoutcast is commonly used as software. You need a server that takes the data flow in and distributes it to all listeners. Thinkerer Studios uses a service provided by Joachim Sicling. Contact him for details and pricing.

Video: We have not yet identified an economical method. SLCN streams many SL programs. You may be able to get current info from them

Re managing hippo groups
===========================================
Change -- easier handling of notecards/objects for attachments.
*To send notecard or object, go to Cookie Town Center SW corner. There is a small metalic box by the bench. It has "HippoGROUPS" on the edge and is named "Thinkerer Studios server". Drag-drop notecard to box. For objects, use Ctrl -drag. Send me an IM telling me to upload. You will be able to attach the notecard/object to your message after I have uploaded.
=====================================================

Get a password at the main Hippo store here:
􀀂

1. Signing on to send notices;
>If you are have trouble signing on, use this link.
http://www.hippo-tech-sl.com/myhippogroups/index.php
>Try opening this page in SL, usingthe inworld browser.
>Copy your password to a text file on your machine. Be sure you take off extraneous chatacters -- the 'quotation marks' around the password, for example.
>copy the password by double click to highlight it, then copy -paste.

2. I have added a picture to show the place you get your general hippo password.
Here is pix showing sign to click on
􀀄
Note that if you are the owner of some Hippo service, you will have a differert password for that service. The general password will give you access to all your list subscriptions, not just those you own. List managers should use the general password to send notices.

The main (master) Notice board is operational here:
􀀃
I will place others in traffic areas. I have now also put one at my place next to the Hobo Railroad info hub.

My plan breaks the system into 2 parts: the subscription panels and the summary note. The sign on the top (What do we do in SL?) gives summary notecard with LMs to places where the subscription boards can be found. Here is a current copy of the notecard:
􀀀

The sign is full perm so you can put that anywhere to announce the lists and give LMs to subscription boards. Here is a copy of the sign, but remember it will be revised frequently at first.
􀀁

The subscription panels are no-transfer, so I can only put them out in places where I can rez. I can put selected panels that fit for the location. I have put out panels at several places on Cookie.

This notecard shows the list managers. A list may have several managers. In general, anyone who would regularly send out messages would be a manager. Some people may be managers in several lists. New managers may be added from time to time.

As a manager of a list, you can manually add subscribers and send notices. You can also sent notecards, but that is more complicated. Here is what you do to manage:

Get a password at the main Hippo store here:
􀀂

Here is pix showing sign to click on
􀀄

Click on one of the hippoGROUPS Password Creator panels on the outdoor entry porch.

Then go to the hippo web page, users section and give your SL name (best use all lower case -- TM) and password to log in.
http://www.hippo-tech-sl.com/secure/

I have had problems getting the sign-in to work reliably. If you have problems, contact one of these people: Raven Schwade or Samos Brissot.

To add people: View the subscriber list by clicking the
“Browse Members”
link for a list.
- Add a member to a group by clicking the “Add New Member” button at
the bottom of the member list.

To send a message: Click on
“Read Messages”
link for the list.
Click the “New Message” button at the bottom of the message history list.

Here are my preliminary suggestions for sending notices.

>ALL NOTICES SHOULD CARRY THE NAME OF THE SENDER OR OF A CONTACT PERSON.

>SEND ONLY MESSAGES THAT FIT THE NAME OF THE LIST. NO PARTIES, REZ DAYS, OR SEASONS GREETINGS. ONLY ANNOUNCE EVENTS THAT ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC -- Not classes that require previous enrollment.
======================================================================
Regular events:
Be sure I have the event on the intro notecard -- that goes to each
person as they subscribe. Don't send separate notecards about regular
events. Just send 1 or more notices near the time of the event and
perhaps during it if it is a long event. Be sure to include the time and a
slurl.

Regularly scheduled events with special announcements (like headliner):
You may want to send a notecard* with the special info on it. On the
notecard, be sure to include the time and LM. Send notices at the time of
the event as with regular events.

Special events:
You should send a notecard* several days in advance, perhaps showing all the performances of the special event. Send notices at the time of the event as with regular events.

Weekly schedules:
You may prefer to send weekly notecards* of a schedule for the following week. Be sure to include the date, time and LM in the notecard. Send to me by Sunday morning. Use title with the word week and the date in the title ("week of 1/25/09" ). I wiil send it out on Sunday.
===================================================

IMPORTANT: If you are giving dated material, put the date in the name of the notecard or object.

Be sure the notecard carries the time and LM. -- not the slurl for notecards. LMs are easier to use and more familiar. You can embed a LM in a notecard by dragging it from your inventory onto the notecard.

To attach a notecard or object, start with ordinary message, find drop-down list at bottom of message entry window, click and select your notecard or object. Note that objects are listed separately from notecards.
